Trade routes are a new addition to Civilization V, once Animal Husbandry is researched very early in the game players can start building Caravan units and Cargo Ships once Sailing has been researched. However, just as in history gone by the real power in Venice lies in its money, culture and, with the introduction of Brave New World, trade routes and tourism. Venice also has the Great Galleas, not the most useful of unique units but with a sizeable renaissance-age fleet they can be very handy. ![]() Yet playing as Venice allows the player to purchase within puppet cities. Puppet cities create culture, science and faith for your empire but players cannot control what is built there. Dandolo cannot build or acquire settlers nor annex cities (cannot make any conquered or bought cities part of the Venetian empire), however his unique ability, named Serenissima, is a Merchant of Venice will appear after researching Optics (and other future sciences) and can be used to purchase city-states who then become puppet cities.
